Benefits of choosing a ROSS Double Planetary Mixer
What does a ROSS Double Planetary Mixer do?
The ROSS Double Planetary Mixer turns over thick, sticky or putty-like materials with great efficiency through a kneading action to the batch which smooths out its consistency and breaks up agglomerates. The same planetary agitation is useful for high-precision granulation and vacuum drying operations.
How does a ROSS Double Planetary Mixer work?
The ROSS Double Planetary Mixer consists of two identical blades that rotate on their own axes, while they orbit the mix vessel on a common axis. The blades continuously advance along the periphery of the vessel, removing material from the vessel wall and transporting it to the interior. In only 36 revolutions around the vessel, the two blades pass through every point in the product zone, physically contacting the entire batch.

Why Choose a ROSS Double Planetary Mixer?
-
Design - This vertical mixer has no shaft seals, bearing, packing, or stuffing boxes submerged in the product zone. Agitators are raised and lowered in/out of the mix vessel by a hydraulic lift, enabling easy access for cleaning between batches. Vacuum hoods and interchangeable vessels are precisely machined and able to sustain a deep level of vacuum up to 29.5" Hg.
-
Efficiency – The change can design enables semi-continuous operation, which can significantly increase production. While one vessel is being wheeled away for remote discharge and cleaning, another can be wheeled into position under the mixer to begin the next batch right away. Each vessel can also be dedicated to a particular formulation to simplify cleaning and further reduce batch-to-batch cross-contamination.
-
Scalability –While kitchen-style single planetary mixers are readily available for simple R&D purposes, such devices are open systems and not scalable, requiring extra time and resources for experimentation once the product moves from lab to production scale. The Double Planetary Mixer is truly scalable and available in many models from ½ pint to 750 gallons.
-
Versatility – The ROSS Double Planetary Mixer can be fitted with three blade designs:
- HV (High Viscosity) Blades – These patented blades produce excellent axial and radial flow for medium to ultra-high viscosity mixing applications. Featuring a precisely angled helical contour, the blades pass each other in a slicing motion while pushing product forward and downward, thus preventing any materials from climbing up into the gearbox area.
- Rectangular Blades – The classic Rectangular Blades provide a powerful kneading action suitable for thoroughly blending wet or dry materials, regardless of the product’s flow characteristics.
- Finger Blades – Used in special applications that require the mixing of delicate fibers and solids, Finger Blades can be custom designed to fine tune axial flow pattern and meet specific mixing requirements.

Tips for selecting the best planetary mixer for your process
This bulletin presents some general guidelines for selecting the most appropriate planetary mixer configuration for a particular application.
Maximize mixing efficiency with a Planetary Mixer
This bulletin explores the different types of planetary-style mixers. For enhanced processing efficiency and flexibility in a multi-product mixing operation, consider the Planetary Dual Disperser which can operate as a classic Double Planetary Mixer or as a Planetary Disperser.
Preparing wet granulations in a planetary mixer
Planetary mixers are ideal for wet granulation processes. Advantages include "one-pot" processing, high uniformity and yield, predictable performance, and ease of cleaning.
Double planetary mixers are ideal for low shear processing of viscous materials.
Viscous products possessing shear-sensitive behavior, fragile components or abrasive properties require gentle but thorough mixing. In most cases, a double planetary mixer is the best choice for processing such applications.
